Massoud was a Kabul University engineering student turned military leader who played a leading role in driving the Soviet army out of Afghanistan, earning him the name "Lion of Panjshayr." His followers call him Amir Sahib-e Shahid which means our beloved martyred commander. Massoud was assassinated in Takhar province two days prior to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
